The problem is that these websites don’t promote creativity; they promote popularity. And if you don’t believe me, take a look at <a href="http://www.delicious.com/">Delicious</a>. It’s always a fad, and the most popular things stay popular by virtue of people reposting them.</p> <p>But the look: that shiny, polished, gradient-filled look that everyone says is gorgeous. The vast majority of websites these days follow the same format, with minor variations. Most of the webpages on the <a href="http://cssremix.com/sites/top-rated/">CSS Remix</a> website have this format, and everyone drools over them because they’re supposedly very attractive.</p> <p>Generally, they are well-built and flawlessly executed, and as a direct result, they look almost exactly the same. I miss the truly unique websites, the ones that don’t follow some design trend because that’s what everyone else is doing. Sites like Delicious, <a href="http://www.digg.com/">Digg</a>, and to a certain extent, even <a href="http://www.tumblr.com/">Tumblr</a> all reward the designer who doesn’t deviate from the norm to create something wildly different from everyone else.
